Allergies to pollen can be very troublesome for some. There are a number of ways to prevent pollen allergies from interfering with daily life.

Sneezing, coughing, and itchy or watery eyes are a few of the potential symptoms of a pollen allergy. Many people experience these allergies during the months of spring and during the middle of September. Luckily, there are a number of things which can be done to prevent pollen allergies from being a problem at any time of the year.

Choose the Right Time to Go Outdoors

There are certain times during the day when pollen counts are higher. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, people with pollen allergies should avoid being outdoors from five to 10 AM. On windy days or when it is dry and hot, people may also experience more irritation due to this problem. Pollen counts tend to be lower after a rainfall.

Close Windows to Prevent Pollen Allergies

It is important to keep in mind that pollen can travel into the house through windows, even if there is a screen. This is why it is so important for anyone with this type of allergy to keep windows closed at all times. Screen doors should also remain closed. Also be sure to close car windows to prevent a pollen allergy from being triggered while driving.

Wash Pets Regularly During Pollen Season

Keep in mind that outdoor pets can be carriers of pollen. It is very common for them to transport it into the house. Be sure to wash pets on a regular basis in order to get the pollen off them. Pollen can also be removed from the dog or cat’s fur by brushing it on a daily basis.

Overcome Pollen Allergies by Vacuuming

Pets and people can both be transporters of pollen. If pollen gets in the house, it is essential to get rid of it. Vacuuming several times a week is the easiest way to do this. It is especially important to vacuum areas where pollen is more likely to be transported by shoes, which will usually be located directly in the front of doors.

Avoid Mowing the Lawn to Trigger Allergies

Anyone with severe allergies to pollen should avoid mowing the lawn themselves. It is best to allow another family member to do it, or hire someone outside of the home. For many people who suffer from pollen allergies, this can be one of the easiest triggers.

Allergies to pollen are not fun to experience, no matter what time of year they occur. If pollen allergies are bothersome enough to interfere with daily life activities, it is ideal to take an over-the-counter allergy medicine. There is no reason to suffer from allergies when they can be prevented or treated.
