The symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome can be embarrassing and life-threatening. Diagnosing PCOS early is the best way to manage the symptoms.

Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a women’s health condition which is caused by the overproduction of androgens, or male sex hormones. Women with the condition also tend to have an insulin production imbalance. The increased amount of androgens and imbalance of insulin levels are the two main factors which are believed to be responsible for PCOS symptoms.

What are the Symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?

An overproduction of androgens stops ovulation, which means that women with PCOS often experience missed or irregular periods and difficulty becoming pregnant. Obesity is one of the most common symptoms of women with the condition. This also puts women with the condition at a greater risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Other common symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome include ovarian cysts, facial hair, oily skin, acne, and skin tags. All of these symptoms of the condition are very embarrassing for those who experience them.

What are Some of the Less Common PCOS Symptoms?

While the symptoms mentioned above are generally experienced by most women who suffer from this condition, there are other symptoms which tend to be less common. Women with severe or extreme cases of polycystic ovary syndrome may experience balding or thinning of the hair, larger muscles, and deepening of the voice. They may also notice excessive body hair on various areas of the body, in addition to the facial hair that most women with the condition experience.

How are Symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Managed?

After being diagnosed with this condition, the doctor will look into PCOS treatment options to help manage symptoms. Many women who suffer from the condition will experience less severe acne and regulated menstrual cycles when they go on the birth control pill. Anti-androgens medications are often used to reduce facial hair growth. Women who experience difficulties becoming pregnant as a result of polycystic ovary syndrome may benefit from fertility medications or in vitro fertilization. Losing body fat through a healthier diet and exercise regimen can also help lessen the severity of symptoms associated with this condition.

Women who notice any PCOS symptoms should be sure to visit their gynecologist. Doctors will use the patient’s medical history, lab testing, and a physical examination to diagnose the condition. An early diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome is very beneficial, as it helps make all of the symptoms of the condition easier to manage. Early diagnosis can also help prevent life-threatening conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.
